Apple Cider Vinegar
The word vinegar originates from the Latin words, ‘vinum’ for wine and ‘acer’ for sour. Essentially, sour wine. Apple cider vinegar is creating by fermenting the sugar of apples to alcohol. This alcohol is then exposed to air and another group of bacteria (acetobacter) converts the alcohol in acetic acid. Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar also contains a substance called mother, which consists of strands of proteins, enzymes, and good bacteria.
Here at Hopper, our apple cider vinegar comes from Goulter’s who are based in Nelson and use certified organic New Zealand apples. They’re a family-run small business and Tim Goulter has over 44 years in wine and vinegar making. We’ve got a container exchange going with them which means we send them our empties for them to refill and they send em’ back to us. Super cool!
Apple cider vinegar is a popular home remedy and has been used for centuries in cooking and medicine. It’s good for gut health, heart health and improves digestion. It’s also surprisingly versatile! It can be gargled for sore throats, used to create amazing salad dressings, to pickle and preserve vegetables, and as an all-purpose cleaner! A lot of people also swear by drinking apple cider vinegar in the morning! Try 2 teaspoons diluted in a large glass of water and add lemon for a kick!
For an all-purpose cleaner:
Mix 1 cup of water with ½ a cup of apple cider vinegar
For an amazing salad dressing you’ll need:
1 peeled quartered shallot, blended with
Olive oil, apple cider vinegar, dijon mustard, honey, salt & pepper
We tried using it in pancakes for an indulgent weekend brunch!
